Bear Grylls on NatGeo versus the Book

Whoooh! I didn’t know that Bear Grylls has written a book of himself! While scanning lazada.com.ph’s non-fiction books page –hoping to find some more good inexpensive deals like Tuesdays with Morrie– I saw Grylls’ HDRed (I guess) face (as you can see on the left side).

I tell you, Bear Grylls is like the living real Superman! I’ve watched a couple of episodes of his TV show, Man Vs. Wild, on NatGeo. Those who have no idea of what I’m talking about, you can check him out here.

All I can say is that he’s an awesome guy! If you’ve seen Tom Hank’s Cast Away then this guy’s kind of like that but not really. Tom Hank’s character got trapped and was forced to do everything just to survive, in Gryll’s case he intentionally goes to dangerous and remote places to show viewers how to survive.

Here’s a full cover image of his autobiography:

Price Tag Realization

While I was in college I treated my allowance as salary from my dear mother. I was able to save, buy what I feel I have to and want to –in short, I was an impulsive buyer.  Aren’t most college students are? Anyway, despite being able to save money, the books that I could only buy were those below 200.00 Php since my allowance a day wasn’t enough that my daily expenses kind of ate a quarter of it. Buying personal stuff and delicious pricey treats from above-average food establishments on impulse (their TV ads and humongous billboards on the streets were so effective!) added to the dilemma. So yeah, I wasn’t really appreciative of money value back then.

But I just realized that when you’re not a student anymore, everything changes! The value of   spending cash becomes important. Now let me lay out the connection of my realization to my present situation, if you have subscribed on my blog or has been following it because you love books too, just like me, you’ll remember my post about me thinking of purchasing a copy of Mitch Albom’s Tuesdays with Morrie. You’ll also recall I mentioned two prospective online stores because they sell the book cheaper than National Bookstore’s offer (it’s 795.00 Php! That’s really expensive!). Plus, buying online gives awesome convenience, it keeps me, and everybody else, from going through the hassle.

So yeah, it’s definitely decided –on my payday, I’ll order a copy!

Those Stacks

Going home last night I saw my books, those I told you sitting in my room’s extended glass-top table, they wave with dust telling me they have been stacked for too long –I’m trying to finish reading Larry Stockstill’s “The Remnant” and Willy W. Chua’s “Harvesting in Famine: Victorious Living in Times of Crises” alternately for more than half a year now; I know it’s a shame that I call myself a bookworm but won’t even find time to finish them! You can’t blame me, I’m having a hectic schedule coming straight from college to working!- then I realized it will take me really really long before I can finish half of them or even start reading a quarter of them especially now that I got work!

But then, I want to take a time off and read them, seriously, they’re an amazing set! I got 4 books for free during a 10-day conference. Another 3 are books given as gifts which includes Yancey’s What Good is God, Hank Hanegraaff’s “The Prayer of Jesus” and John Bevere’s “Under Cover: The Promise of Protection Under His Authority”.

Geez, I can go on and on but it’ll be better if I will intentionally find time to enjoy them. Meanwhile I hear from friends some good authors that are to look for when I go to a store: Paulo Coelho (this guy’s quotes are tweeted a lot by many friends!), Josh Grisham (they say his novels are the best), Don Piper (I know John Piper) and many more. Remember my last post? I mentioned 2 shopping sites, Amazon and Lazada PH, I’m thinking about buying on either of the two of them. Reasonable prices on brand new books!

Just to refresh I found a good video on youtube. Kudos to the makers of this video!

Vacancy and Good-Finds

I’m already thinking of finding a book that’s good to read banked for the coming months just after I finish reading those queued in my room and I think I’ve got an idea what book: Mitch Album’s Tuesdays with Morrie!

The book’s built up a good reputation in me since I hear many friends recommending it highly since college. Now that I got work, it’s quite assured for me to buy a copy! I found good deals on the Internet just to get away from the hassle, one at Amazon and Lazada they range from 300.00 Php to 600.00 Php which is not bad for brand new books published abroad.

Looking forward to purchase a copy on my payday!

Mr. John C. Maxwell

Before having been given a gift some years ago of John Maxwell’s book titled “Partners in Prayer” by a good friend, I’ve heard people talk about his books with great compliments especially some good youth leaders I’ve met and have become friends with.

However I found it odd just now that when I received a copy of his book I mentioned, I wasn’t quite hooked to it. But I don’t blame the author, the writing’s really good and the writer’s very respectable since I have a good amount of testimonies from those who have read and are reading Maxwell’s books, I guess it’s on me. I didn’t have a good devotional life during those times.

Anyway, it’s a good thing that the book ended up on one of my youth’s hands. Eventually, the book’s effect on me turned to be an absolute opposite on him! So everything’s all good. But then, maybe when I get a copy of his book –and I just found one on the Internet, his 5 Levels of Leadership – the effect will be different by then. Title’s very interesting.

Birth a Blog

Is anybody out there who’s a bookworm like me? If you are, we should be really good friends and hang out real soon! I’m kind of a book lover too but I can’t really find a good means of outlet for the overflow of my insights about the books I am enamoured of reading. Then I thought the brilliance in blogging! I think that aside from my assumptions which are obviously biased, it will be very helpful, informative, and interesting since I’ll get more ideas from the readers’ different views and comments about the book or chapters I’ll be reviewing.

Novels are eye candies for me, but I opt for those that are mystery/crime-solving themed. I like to be intrigued and be allowed to think process and make deductions. Even though I’m only reading, I feel smart when I get my guesses right with the answers to the mysteries on the book. Aside from the Sherlock-like books, the chick-flick-like stuff. You know those that have romantic chunks to them that bring squeals then at times would bring tears? Love them.

Another genre would be those of non-fiction and encompasses both academic learning and some amazing life lessons. I believe even after formal studies there’s a lot more to learn so I’m very fond of buying books authored by Philip Yancey and C.S. Lewis. They’re my top 2!

I would love to read your insights so I hope to get comments from readers out there for the coming posts I’ll be publishing here!
